Keene Pumpkin Festival
History of the Festival It all started innocently enough back in 1991. That''s when Nancy Sporborg marshaled a group of civic-minded Keene-area residents to put on a Harvest Festival at the peak of leaf-peeping season. To help set a festive autumn mood, community members carved more than 600 pumpkins.
Seeing all those twinkling jack-o-lanterns gave Sporborg a very ambitiousif strangeidea. Why not see if Keene''s fall festival could set the World Record for lit jack-o-lanterns in one place? In fact, why not create an entirely new category in the world record books?
The First World Record
The idea picked up momentum faster than a pumpkin rolling down a steep hill. In 1992, Monadnock-area residents turned out in droves with jack-o-lanterns in hand. They set the first-ever world record with 1,628 lit jack-o-lanterns. The Keene Pumpkin Festival was born.
Since its beginnings, The Keene Pumpkin Festival has grown steadily in popularity...and in pumpkins. The current jack-o-lantern world recorda whopping 28,952was set right here in Keene at the 2003 Pumpkin Festival. Learn more about the record.
A Major Regional Event
Today, The Keene Pumpkin Festival attracts tens of thousands of families, including visitors coming from all points of the globe. We''ve attracted the attention of major publications and even some celebrities!
The Pumpkin Festival took on special meaning in 2001, just weeks after the tragic events of September 11. Although we did not set a new world record, we achieved something far more important: We brought together more than 65,000 people from across the region and the country to share a day filled with fun, laughter and hope for the future. For many who attended, the healing process began that special day.
It''s All About Community
But no matter how The Keene Pumpkin Festival continues to grow in attendance and activities, our mission remains the same as when Nancy Sporborg had her original pumpkin epiphany: to provide an annual event that brings families, friends and neighbors together to celebrate the positive power of community.
